FAQs
Can I see a counsellor on my own?
You can come on your own, but there is more chance of finding a resolution if both partners attend.
Is Relate counselling confidential?
We will not give your name or any information about you to anyone outside Relate unless someone's personal safety is at risk.
How long does counselling last?
Counselling continues for as long as you and your counsellor feel it helps.
How long is an appointment?
Usually up to one hour at the same time of the same day of each week.
Do I have to pay?
You will be asked for a registration fee of £20.00 to cover the cost of arranging your appointments. If this amount is a problem for you, speak to one of our appointments staff about our limited bursary scheme. We are a charity and ask you to consider making an additional contribution each time you attend. The suggested rate is £40.00 or more. If you are a tax payer we will ask you to sign a Gift Aid form as this allows us to reclaim the tax from the Inland Revenue. The service you receive is not affected by how much you contribute.
What if I need to cancel an appointment?
Counselling is most effective when there is regular attendance so it is important you make every effort to keep your appointment. Cancellation charges apply for missed or cancelled appointments with less than 6 calendar days notice. Due to a high demand for appointments, if you cancel or miss more than two appointments during your counselling, your slot may be given to another client.
You may re-register for counselling when you are
more available.

Will I have to wait for Relate counselling?
We aim to offer initial consultation appointments within two weeks of your booking, subject to your availibility. There is a waiting list for counselling after the consultation. we always try and match appointments to our clients' availibility. If you cannot accept three offers of an appointment, we may ask you to contact us again when you have more availibility. Generally you will be offered an appointment sooner if you can be flexible about when and where you can attend for counselling.
Can I bring my children?
No. Children can be distracting for yourself and other clients. You may lose your appointment if you bring your child to Relate.
